How the test runs

We load your page and read it the way a phone and Google’s crawler do, while Google tests it on a simulated phone. Each row is filled in as its check finishes, then the certificate is stamped.

What the website grader checks

The website grader first checks that the page you enter loads, then checks 4 areas of it: whether Google is allowed in (indexing), titles and headings (including the meta description), phone links and forms (ease of contact), and speed on a phone. They’re the rows of your certificate, in the same order. It reads the page the way a customer’s phone and Google’s crawler see it. You don’t need a login, and it works on WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or a hand-built site.

Google is allowed in

Whether the page loads, and whether anything on your site tells Google to stay away from it.

  • The status code and any redirects
  • HTTPS, and http redirecting to it
  • noindex in a meta tag or the X-Robots-Tag header
  • robots.txt rules for Googlebot
  • The canonical tag

Titles and headings

The blue headline and the short summary people see in Google’s results, and the page’s main heading.

  • A page title, and its length
  • A meta description, and its length
  • One main (H1) heading

Phone links and forms

What someone on a phone needs to get in touch without hunting for it.

  • Tap-to-call links
  • A UK phone number in the page text
  • Email links
  • An enquiry form
  • A viewport tag, so the page fits a phone screen

Speed on a phone

Google’s PageSpeed Insights loads your page on a simulated phone and scores it out of 100. Where Google has enough visits on record, we add the Core Web Vitals your real visitors got over the last 28 days.

  • Google’s performance score and its band
  • Main-content load time (LCP), layout shift and blocking time in the lab test
  • LCP, INP and CLS from real visitors, where Google has them
  • What’s slowing the page down, in plain English

How to read your grade

Start with anything marked Fix first. Those are the problems most likely to cost you calls or keep the page out of Google. Worth fixing comes next, and a Pass needs nothing. The tally on the certificate counts every check we could run.

Google’s PageSpeed score

Google sets the score out of 100, and we show it as Google reports it. It comes from a lab test: Google loads your page once, on a simulated phone over a fixed network, which makes it repeatable and good for finding what’s slow (About PageSpeed Insights, checked 2026).

Real-user Core Web Vitals

These come from Chrome users who visited over the last 28 days. Google only has them for pages and sites with enough visits, and it doesn’t say how many that is (CrUX methodology, checked 2026). The grader labels which you’re seeing: figures for this page, for your whole site, or none.

A higher score isn’t a ranking guarantee

Google says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, but that there’s no single signal and good results don’t guarantee top rankings. It also says chasing a perfect score just for SEO may not be the best use of your time (Google Search Central, checked 2026).

If your page is slow, our guide why is my website so slow? covers the usual causes on trade and clinic sites and what to fix first. For the responsiveness metric, INP, see our INP Core Web Vitals guide.

Thinking about a new site instead of fixing this one? Our website cost calculator prices one from our packages, with totals for year 1 and over 3 years.

How to read the certificate
  • Fix first. Start here. Most likely to cost you calls or keep the page out of Google.

  • Worth fixing. Next, once the Fix first items are done.

  • Pass. Nothing to do.

What a website checker can’t tell you

A website checker can’t see your Google Business Profile, whether Google has actually indexed your pages, or whether a real person can get in touch. Those need a person, and they’re what our free website check adds.

Results by email, back within 48 hours. Want the whole site reviewed instead? The Full SEO audit is £149, one-off, with a prioritised fix list. See what the audit covers.

  • Your Google Business Profile

In a local search, your profile often shows before your website does. We check it by hand: the category, opening hours, the areas you serve, photos and reviews.

  • Whether Google has indexed your pages

The grader can see whether a page lets Google in. Only Google knows if it’s actually in the index, so we check which of your pages are there and list any that are missing.

  • Whether a real person can enquire

We use your site the way a customer would, on a phone. Does the number ring in one tap? Does the form send, and does it ask only what you need?

Common problems on trade and clinic websites

These are the problems the grader is built to catch. None of them needs a new website to fix.

Website getting traffic but no enquiries? 7 things to check

A phone number that isn’t a link
On a phone, a number written as plain text has to be copied by hand. A number buried in the footer is one of the first things we flag. Make it a tap-to-call link near the top of the page.
Photos uploaded straight from a phone
Full-size photos are often what makes a page slow on 4G. Resize them to the size they’re shown at and save them as WebP.
A homepage titled “Home”
The title is the blue headline in Google’s results, and “Home” gives Google nothing to go on. Say what you do and where.
A noindex left on after launch
If a site was built with a noindex tag to keep it out of Google while it was unfinished, and nobody removed it, the finished site stays out too.
A phone number as the only way in
Someone browsing at 9pm may not ring. An email link or a short form catches the people who’d rather write.

Website grader questions

Is the website grader really free?

Yes. You don’t pay, and you don’t give us an email address: the results appear on the page. Each run passes a quick Cloudflare security check to keep bots out, and you can run up to 5 checks every 10 minutes. If you’d like a person to look at your site as well, our free website check is free too.

What does a website grader check?

A website grader, or free website audit tool, tests a page against things that affect how well it works for visitors and Google. Ours checks four areas on one page: speed on a phone, using Google’s PageSpeed Insights; page titles and meta descriptions; whether Google may index the page; and how easy it is to call or enquire.

Is a website checker the same as an SEO audit?

No. A website checker like this one tests a single page against a fixed list. An SEO audit reviews the whole site: every page, how Google crawls it and what’s holding it back, with a prioritised fix list. Our Full SEO audit is £149, one-off. Run the grader first to see where you stand.

Does my PageSpeed score affect my Google ranking?

Not on its own. Google says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, but there’s no single ranking signal and good results don’t guarantee top rankings. It describes the PageSpeed lab test as useful for debugging. Use the score to find what’s slowing your page down, and don’t chase 100 just for SEO.

Why is there no real-user data for my site?

Google only reports Core Web Vitals from real Chrome users for pages and sites that are publicly discoverable and get enough visits, and it doesn’t publish the threshold. When a page has too little data, Google uses your whole site’s figures instead. When the site has too little as well, there’s nothing to show, but the lab test still runs.

Can it check my Google Business Profile?

No. The grader only reads your website. Your Google Business Profile is part of our free website check: a person looks at your category, opening hours, the areas you serve, photos and reviews, then emails you what to fix first, back within 48 hours. You don’t need to share any logins.

Do you keep the website address I enter?

No. Our server fetches the page and its robots.txt, sends the address to Google’s PageSpeed Insights, and passes the findings back to your browser. We don’t save the address or your results, and they’re gone when you leave the page. Your IP address is held in server memory for up to 10 minutes to limit repeat checks.
