TL;DR
- Wix vs custom website comes down to who does the work. Wix suits a small site you build and update yourself. A designer-built site suits a business that wants more pages, a quote form built around its jobs and someone else doing the updates.
- In cash, Wix is cheaper. The Core plan is £16 a month on a yearly plan: £576 plus tax over three years. Our Starter site with a Care plan comes to £1,300 over the same three years.
- Wix isn’t slow. 91% of UK Wix sites pass Google’s Core Web Vitals on phones, against 66% of WordPress sites (HTTP Archive, September 2026).
- The real catch is leaving. A Wix site can’t be hosted anywhere else and its blog posts can’t be exported, so moving away means rebuilding.
- Choose Wix if the site is simple and you have the time. Pay a designer if your hours are worth more on the tools.
Wix vs custom website is mostly a question of who does the work. Wix is the right answer for a sole trader or a small clinic with a few pages, some spare evenings and no plans to move. A custom website, built for you on WordPress or in code, suits a business that wants a page for every service, a quote form that takes photos and someone else keeping it up to date. Wix costs less in cash. A designer-built site costs less of your time.
We build websites on WordPress and Next.js, so we’re not neutral. That’s why every Wix fact below comes from Wix’s own pages, checked in October 2026, and why we say plainly where Wix wins. By “custom website” we mean any site a designer builds for you that you can take to another developer, whether it runs on WordPress or custom code. Our guide to choosing a website platform compares those two.
When Wix is the right answer
#Wix is a sensible choice more often than agencies admit. It’s probably right for you if most of these are true:
- You’re starting out and need a few pages online this month
- You have an evening a week to build the site, write the words and keep it current
- A simple contact form does the job for now
- You’re happy to stay on Wix for as long as you have the site
- Your budget for the website is under a few hundred pounds
Wix’s UK plans are Light at £9 a month, Core at £16 and Business at £25, each billed for a year up front, with tax on top (Wix plans page, checked October 2026). For a trade or clinic we’d look at Core. Light doesn’t take online payments, and a file upload field on a form, which you’d need for customers to send photos, comes with Core and above (Wix Help Center).
Wix
A website builder you design and run yourself, hosted by Wix
Good for
- Plans from £9 a month on a yearly plan, with hosting included
- A drag-and-drop editor, so you can change anything yourself
- Wix runs the hosting, security and platform updates
- Fast on phones: most Wix sites pass Google’s Core Web Vitals
- Built-in SEO settings for page titles, descriptions, URLs, redirects and structured data
Watch out for
- The site can’t be hosted anywhere else, so leaving means rebuilding it
- Blog posts can’t be exported to another platform
- Building, writing and updating the site takes your time
- Photo uploads on forms need the Core plan or above
- The subscription runs for as long as the site is live
Suits: Sole traders and small clinics with a simple site, some spare time and no plans to move.
When a custom website is worth paying for
#Paying a designer makes sense when the website has more to do than a contact page, or when your time is better spent elsewhere. Look at it seriously if any of these sound familiar:
- An evening on the website is an evening you could have billed
- You want a page for each service and the areas you cover, written to be found in search
- You need a quote form that takes photos, or a booking link that fits the system you already use
- You want the files and hosting in your name, so any developer can take the site over
- You built a Wix site a while ago and it doesn’t bring in enquiries
A designer-built website
Built for you on WordPress or in code, hosted where you choose
Good for
- Someone else designs, writes and builds it. With us that takes around 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the package
- The files and hosting can be in your name, so you can change developer or host
- Forms and pages built around your jobs, such as photo uploads on a quote form
- Updates and small changes done for you on a care plan
Watch out for
- More cash up front: £400 to £1,200 for our website packages
- Changes go through the designer, unless they set up an editor you can use
- A badly built site can be slower than a Wix one
- You need a contract that hands over the files and the domain
Suits: Businesses that want more from the website than a contact page and would rather not build it themselves.

The Wix figures are from its plans page in October 2026: yearly billing, with tax added for your billing address and the final price shown at checkout. Wix doesn’t publish monthly-billing prices without logging in. We’re not VAT-registered, so our prices have no VAT to add.
So Wix is several hundred pounds cheaper over three years. What the table can’t show is your time. Count the evenings it takes to build the pages, write the words, take the photos and keep everything current, and decide what those evenings are worth to you. If you’d rather spend them on paid work or with your family, the gap closes quickly.
Read the cost guideHow Much Does a Website Cost in the UK? (2026)Price ranges for builders, freelancers and agencies, the running costs to budget for, and red flags in cheap quotes.Do you own a Wix website, and can you leave?
#You own what you put on a Wix site, but not the site itself. Wix’s terms say “you shall own all intellectual property pertaining to your User Content”, while Wix owns the platform, including its templates (Wix Terms of Use, revised 22 October 2026). The site also has to stay where it is: Wix says a site “needs to be hosted and operated on Wix’s servers” (Wix Help Center).
Here’s what you can take with you if you leave, according to Wix’s help pages:
- Your domain. You can transfer it, but not within 60 days of buying it or of a previous transfer. For a .co.uk or .uk domain you change the IPS tag instead of using a transfer code (Wix Help Center).
- Your contacts and form submissions, as CSV files (contacts, form submissions).
- Your blog posts, only by copying them by hand. Wix says it’s “not possible to export blog posts to other platforms” (Wix Help Center).
- The design and page layouts stay on Wix.
In practice, leaving Wix means rebuilding the site and moving the words and photos across. If your Wix pages already rank, keep their addresses or redirect each one to its new page, or you can lose those rankings. Our website redesign service maps every old URL before anything moves. A custom site is only portable if you hold the files and the domain, so get both in writing whoever builds it.
Wix is faster than its reputation
#Google’s Core Web Vitals measure how quickly a page loads, responds and settles on real visitors’ phones. HTTP Archive tracks how many sites on each platform pass all three. In the UK, website builders do well.
Those figures are for September 2026, counting whole sites rather than single pages. So speed isn’t a reason to leave Wix. A custom site can be just as fast, but only if it’s built well and hosted properly. On the Mobile Detailers build we got the landing page to load its main content in 1.9 seconds on a phone. Ask any designer for figures like that from their own sites.
SEO control on Wix and on a custom site
#Wix covers the SEO basics a local business needs. You can edit each page’s title, description and URL and add structured data (SEO settings), edit robots.txt (robots.txt editor) and set up to 5,000 301 redirects once you’ve connected your own domain (redirects). Every Wix site has a sitemap that updates itself, and connecting Google Search Console needs a paid plan and your own domain (Wix Help Center).
Where a custom site goes further is the code and the page templates. A designer can build a template that gives every service page the same structure, schema and internal links, and you can change anything Google looks at. For most trades that’s a nice-to-have. When a Wix site doesn’t rank, the cause is usually the content: one “Services” page for everything, no mention of the areas you cover, and no reviews. Our SEO guide for tradesmen covers those, whichever platform you’re on.
Quote forms and photo uploads
#A quote form that takes photos saves you a site visit for jobs you’d turn down anyway. On Wix, the file upload field is a premium feature, on Core and above, and takes up to 30 files per submission (Wix Help Center). You set the fields up yourself in the form editor.
On a designer-built site, the form is built around your jobs: the questions you’d ask on the phone, photo upload, and the enquiry sent to your inbox. Our Growth package (£1,200) includes a quote form with photo upload, so customers can send the leak, the loft or the garden before you visit.
Who does the updates
#On Wix, you do. Wix keeps the platform, hosting and security up to date, and every change to your words, photos and prices is yours to make in the editor. That suits owners who like doing it and becomes a chore for those who don’t.
On a designer-built site, a care plan handles it. Ours start at £25 a month for hosting, backups, updates and 30 minutes of edits, and Care+ at £45 gives you an hour of edits and a monthly health report. Both are monthly and you can cancel any time. See the care plans.

#Each row is something a trade or clinic owner asks us about. Neither route wins every row.

Website builder vs web designer, and how to decide
#Answer these honestly. If you tick most of them, start on Wix and revisit in a year. If you tick few, a designer-built site will probably pay for itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
#Is Wix good for a small business?
Yes, for a simple site you build and update yourself. Plans start at £9 a month on a yearly plan, hosting is included and most Wix sites pass Google’s speed checks on phones. It’s a weaker fit if you want someone else to do the work, need lots of pages or might move platform later.
Is a custom website better than Wix?
Not automatically. A custom website gives you more control over the code, the forms and where the site is hosted, and someone else does the work. Wix costs less in cash and is fast. A custom site is better when your time is worth more than the price difference, or when you’ve outgrown what Wix does.
Can I move my Wix site to another host?
No. Wix says sites must be hosted on Wix’s servers and its architecture doesn’t support external hosting. You can transfer your domain, 60 days after buying it, and export contacts and form submissions as CSV files. The design and pages have to be rebuilt, and blog posts copied over by hand.
Do I own my Wix website?
You own your content: the words, photos and other material you upload, according to Wix’s terms. Wix owns the platform and templates, and the site can only run on Wix. If you register your domain through Wix it’s yours to transfer, after a 60-day lock following purchase or a previous transfer.
Is Wix bad for SEO?
No. Wix lets you edit page titles, descriptions and URLs, add structured data, edit robots.txt and set up redirects. For a local trade or clinic that covers the essentials. When a Wix site doesn’t rank, the usual cause is thin content: one services page, no areas mentioned and few reviews.
How much does a custom website cost compared with Wix?
Wix Core costs £576 plus tax over three years on yearly billing. Our Starter website is £400 up front, and with a Care plan at £25 a month it comes to £1,300 over three years. You pay more in cash for a designer-built site and spend far less of your own time.
